Terra and I discovered these foam swords at Walmart. Aaaaannnnnddddd she gave me permission to get a couple – one for me and one to teach my little padawan. Great times. As can be seen in this video, we also utilize bubbles in our training process. And I get a little too close to my wee swordsman at the end….

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen [movie review]
I managed to get out and see the new Transformers movie last night. First impression – quite a ride!
Most of the reviews I’ve scanned complain about the same things: a weak plot, shallow characters, the movie as a whole being an excuse for crazy special effects and explosions. Ah, whatever. That’s my thought. First of all, if you’re looking to a movie about extraterrestrial robots who can transform into random vehicles and electronics for some sort of inspired plot line…well…seriously. I pointed out to my dad (who went to see it and enjoyed it as well), that to truly dive into the extraterrestrial robot theme and make it believable would require so much back story and scientific development as to render it unaccessible to most of the public (and make a huge book out of it). I’m sure it can (and maybe will) be done. But not in two hours on the big screen.
My thoughts? The plot in general is solid. You have the Fallen, a quite obsessed antagonist, and then Witwicky (or whatever his last name is) as a primary protagonist, with his band of robots and humans who strive to defeat the fallen. In my mind most plots fall apart where (usually) the very powerful antagonist, for some unstated reason, limits the use of his power or overlooks a very simple method of victory, and this is usually done to ensure the victory of the protagonist. I really didn’t get that feel.
The real teller for me in a movie is this: “Did it take you away?” It did for me. There was annoying kid behind me in the theatre who wouldn’t stop making rather inane comments throughout the previews (it would have been slightly tolerable if they had actually been funny or insightful…not so much…). I wondered how it would go through the movie. Interestingly enough, the comments ceased about halfway through the movie when things started to get kinda intense. The movie had eventually swept him away as well!
I enjoyed the robot fighting scenes – some of which, if they had included real men, would have earned the movie an R-rating for graphic violence.
Drawbacks? Mainly about a dozen subplots or plotlines which are left unexplored. Of course, to explore them adequately would probably have taken a half-dozen movies… There were also a bunch of sexually themed jokes, some more crass than others. And I was a little peeved when I heard Optimus Prime curse…I had just thought of him as above that…
In the end, you just have to ask yourself if you can enjoyably suspend your disbelief about alien robots who can transform. If you can enjoyably believe that for a couple of hours, then you will will probably enjoy Michael Bay’s robotic extravaganza
Jars of Clay music video – “Two Hands”
Came across this – apparently Jars of Clay has a new music video out for a song off some collaborative album. I think these guys are some of the most consistently creative musicians out there. No two albums of theirs sound the same, and that goes for their songs as well. Watch, listen, enjoy – and be challenged as well!
my wonderfully creative son…plays games his own way…
Tonight at small group Terra and I had childcare. Fun times. It’s always interesting trying to keep kids entertained for long periods of time. Luckily for us the house we meet at has a great little backyard to go out and play in. So out we went, running around and doing different games and stuff. I enjoyed my son’s “version” of everything. He’s just two years old and has his own little perspective on the world.
I was singing “Father Abraham” with a few of the older children, and he started prancing around, waving his sands half yelling, half singing “Sons! Sons!” while he waved his arms around. Terra and Erica (another adult helping us with childcare) found it highly hilarious.
But my favorite was his take on Monkey in the Middle. Erica had taken over to give me a break, and so she had all the kids out in the yard and was attempting a sort of “group” version of monkey in the middle, with most of the kids not quite clear on whether they were getting the ball or not – so they were all going for it. But the ball gets thrown to Keaton, and he snags it, turns and runs away…and launches the ball into the bushes. Apparently his version of “Keep Away” is him versus the world!
Interesting interview with John C. Wright
I caught this online, an interview with John C. Wright (and author who has quickly become one of my favorites…). He’s the first author being interviewed. I think I had only vaguely ‘heard’ of the second one being interviewed, but the latter one definitely raises some great points about the science-fiction genre. check it out:
I think I am just starting to realize one of the reasons I love so many different science-fiction and fantasy books is that they truly do deal with deeper issues. And the Christian fiction that I enjoy has the technique of exploring the deeper meanings of life without beating you over the head with a specific message (Stephen Lawhead excels at weaving a Christian worldview into his novels and dealing with deeper issues without “forcing” a perspective or understanding upon the reader).
And I think, also, this is a reason I enjoy playing with the idea of writing science fiction. One day I really am going to start putting my ideas on paper (or on the screen, as it will probably be). Watch out!
Green Lantern Movie Trailer….I wish…
Brian passed this along to me and I couldn’t resist sharing it… Some dude made this using clips from different movies and just CGI-ing in the stuff that wasn’t there. He did an awesome job. A freaking awesome job. So much so that I wish this were the movie that was coming out. It looks pretty incredible. Check it out:
Mute for a day
“Mute?” you say…Yep, thats been me today – well, almost. I have this most heinous of sores in my mouth. And I forgot to take aleive this morning, and didn’t even bring along Listerine to help with the pain in my mouth (yeh, when you rinse with that it not only helps heal up the sore, but it also kinda numbs the sore for a bit as well). So I was just completely in pain and well, couldn’t even talk. That really stunk. I just hope people didn’t think I was being stuck up by trying not to talk much…
Earlier in the week one of the drivers asked if I’d had a stroke or something over the weekend because I was talking funny because of the sore.
In other news, I’ve been spending a bit of time getting my newest blog up and running: Leading in Worship. Check it out and let me know what you think!
