So I’m giving my oldest a bath tonight. He’s gotten really good at doing the bath – I’m really not too worried about him drowning or hurting himself. I do get wet – but it’s mainly because he manages to sling water around when I’m the closest to him.
Since he’s so comfortable in the tub, I feel a little free to lighten up on how tightly I watch him. Not meaning I leave the room or I take my eyes off him – but I will allow myself to go to the bathroom (since the toilet is right there next to the tub) if I really have to.
(Hope this isn’t too crass for ya’ll out there – if it is, well…stop reading!)
And it just so happened that I had to go to the bathroom tonight. I’d already washed and rinsed Keaton and he was just playing with all the random stuff we’ve collected for his tub-time. So I plopped down the toiled and proceeded to get down to my business. Well, it would happen that at the exact moment I sit down and start, Keaton decides to lean over the edge of the tub…and start to slide onto his face!
Needless to say, I was glued to my seat, but I was close enough to catch him – and he had his hands out and would have been fine without my assistance. He might have cried about it at first because it scared him, but he would have been okay. As it was, he was suddenly on his stomache outside the tub with a very confused and slightly frightened look on his face.
I explained to him that’s why we don’t lean over the edge of the tub. I’m not sure his 19 month old brain grasped all that, but I told him all the same. Even so, his play was slightly subdued from there on. I just laugh at his impeccable timing!
